Individuality

The idea or mentality that “time is running out” is something that always seems to dominate the psyche of “the citizen”.

If one wishes to join a society, to be of a community, for example, one relinquishes a little bit of their inherent individuality, i.e., one’s freedom to pursue paths less often chosen. There is boundless discomfort in uncommon paths, and the mere vision of them in the mind’s eye can be enough to deter “the citizen” from ever wanting to experience them. The safer, beaten paths are, thus, chosen: education, job, family, legacy. Repeat.

Education. Job. Family. Legacy.

“Time is running out” and, commonly, one opts not to linger in feelings of stagnation to reflect on where to go next. Stagnation terrifies. Stillness and silence intimidate. Choices must be narrowed down to a single decision that, in turn, must be acted upon in order to “move forward”.

If you embrace it, however, you may come to understand that emptiness is not an enemy to you. Rather, it is more like a mentor, a presence that has always been at your side to support your ability to see ahead more clearly.

Picking something and hoping for the best is a decision-making tactic made by those who fear the passage of time. The flow of time, though, does not aim to dominate you or your life. Indeed, if it has a conscience, it likely cares little of our existence. It is something that operates on its own, independent of all that is around it. The flow of time is, truly, “individual”. It stands out and it attracts attention for not adhering to external pressures.
